Mori 2A serves up sustainability

Mori 2A, the Italian manufacturer of high-quality equipment for the hotel, restaurant and catering (HoReCa) sector, is switching up to Outokumpu Circle Green®, the world's first towards zero stainless steel to lead by example in the hospitality industry’s journey towards a more sustainable future.

Professionals in the dynamic hospitality sector face significant challenges, including the growing importance of innovation and sustainability in their products. Sustainable initiatives in the industry aim to reduce environmental impact, save resources, and promote responsible management. Mori 2A aims to be at the forefront of this environmentally conscious shift.

Sustainability is central to Mori 2A’s ambitions. Rooted in its corporate values, the Mori 2A Cares project guides its growth. The name of the project is not a coincidence: it aims to spread Mori 2A’s vision of sustainability through individual involvement and awareness, showing that even small businesses can improve its sustainability. Mori 2A aims to inspire and set an example for other companies choosing the same path.

As part of its journey towards a more environmentally friendly future, Mori 2A is now using Outokumpu’s Circle Green Core range in its gastronorm containers and lids. Although they have been using our stainless steel for over 30 years, this new initiative will help them improve their carbon footprint and contribute to their CO2 emissions reduction targets.

Dish out innovation with Circle Green

Circle Green has the same quality performance characteristics as existing stainless steels. The difference is that Outokumpu has made extreme efforts to minimize emissions at every step of production, including sourcing and processing low-emission alloying elements and ferrochrome.

By maximizing recycled content and using 100% low-carbon electricity in steelmaking processes, as well as minimizing emissions across other processes seen throughout the production line, Circle Green achieves the lowest carbon footprint in the world. And for some grades, it can reduce emissions by over 93% compared to the industry average.

In 2023, Mori 2A produced around 160,500 gastronorm containers and 85,000 lids, with heights ranging from 20-100 millimetres. 304 stainless steel is used for these products and the Circle Green orders placed by Mori 2A will form part of this production 

 

Transparency is Mori 2A’s secret ingredient

Mori 2A is already committed to a series of initiatives to achieve a carbon-neutral product portfolio. Its team strives daily to find new solutions to reduce waste and increase the use of recycled raw materials and consumables. It also sells 100% of the scrap generated by production waste to a company specializing in material recovery. Additionally, thanks to a recent initiative, Mori 2A has achieved process water savings of more than 25%.

Consumer demand for more attention to sustainability and climate change is increasing but not always conscious. Therefore, it’s important that companies live up to concepts like ‘sustainability’ through concrete and valuable initiatives. Mori 2A’s actions in achieving more sustainable business practices are clear through its already existing initiatives that are now furthered with the switch to Circle Green.

Alvise Mori adds:

Drivers include a combination of consumer awareness, regulations, social pressure, competitive advantage, and increased access to information. Forward-looking companies are responding to this demand by adapting their practices and clearly communicating their sustainability initiatives.”

The reduction of emissions, and thus the consumption of both energy and resources, plays a key role in achieving sustainability goals. Moreover, many companies are setting targets to become carbon neutral by 2030 or 2050.

Another important trend, encouraged by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), is the quest for collaboration with suppliers who share the same commitments towards sustainability. Companies often adopt a Code of Ethics or Code of Conduct to formalize these commitments. Mori 2A and Outokumpu’s partnership, along with the increasing use of our Circle Green, highlight the importance of using raw materials to create sustainable high-quality products.
