Outokumpu Circle Green® is a fitting material for OSTP’s tubular green product concept

OSTP, a specialist in welded stainless steel pipes and fittings, considers sustainability equally vital as innovation, durability, and reliability for its products. That is why it has adopted Outokumpu Circle Green®, the world’s first towards zero stainless steel, as a raw material to manufacture its Ultra Green tubular products. The aim is to supply stainless steel pipes and fittings with the lowest CO2 footprint in the market.

OSTP CEO Andrea Gatti

“Commitment to sustainability is woven into our very core,” says Andrea Gatti, Chief Executive Officer of the OSTP Group. “Having already achieved our early milestones in reducing CO2 emissions within Scope 1 and 2 to being close to zero, we’re now charting a bold new roadmap for a greener future.”

The specialist in welded stainless steel tubular products has a long history lasting more than 100 years, including successful mergers within the Nordic stainless steel industry. Its products are widely used across multiple sectors, for example pulp and paper, chemical, water treatment and desalination, data centers and energy sectors including renewables.

Outokumpu’s longstanding partnership with Andrea and his family dates back to the inception of our Tornio operations in the mid-1970s, when they first began sourcing materials from Outokumpu.

OSTP, the joint venture between Outokumpu and Andrea’s family holding company, has built an even stronger foundation of shared principles around safety, quality, and sustainability. And as the world strives for a more sustainable future, our environmental goals have evolved together.

“Currently, our Scope 1 and 2 emissions are  negligible. We have implemented robust processes and actions aimed at further reducing these emissions without relying on carbon credits and offsets,” says Gatti.

To provide its customers tubular products with the lowest CO2 emissions including scope 3, the OSTP group is progressively integrating Circle Green into its new Ultra Green product line. “For customers seeking process pipes and fittings with the lowest direct and indirect CO2 emissions, Circle Green perfectly aligns with our Ultra Green concept,” Gatti explains.

Circle Green stainless steels match existing products in performance and mechanical behavior. The key difference is the way they are produced, with strict emission controls at every stage of the value chain, including sourcing, manufacturing, processing, and logistics. This meticulous approach involves sourcing low-emission alloying elements and ferrochrome, maximizing recycled content, and using 100 percent low-carbon electricity for processes like the electric arc furnace (EAF). As a result, the carbon footprint of Circle Green is up to 93% lower than the global average.

Using the Circle Green Supra 316L/4404 austenitic grade, OSTP has already observed promising results for its Ultra Green pipes and fittings in the water treatment industry, marking just the beginning of its journey.

Gatti adds: “We recently conducted an assessment for 2024, evaluating the percentage of projects, sales, customers, and distributors that demand environmental credentials. While Ultra Green tubular products currently make up a small portion of overall OSTP deliveries, we anticipate an increased adoption in the future.”

Sustainability at core

OSTP is committed to ensuring that its products are part of a continuous cycle of usability. Its stainless steel products are 100 percent recyclable, highlighting the dedication to minimizing environmental impact.

At the core of this effort are our own initiatives – Outokumpu uses a substantial amount of recycled steel in our production process, resulting in an impressively low CO2 footprint.

Stainless steel is fully recyclable, making it a key contributor to the global circular economy. Today, over 90% of the raw materials used in Outokumpu stainless steel come from recycled sources. With this in mind, OSTP ensures that the scrap goes back to Outokumpu melting shops in the proximity of its plants to drive circularity”.

Gatti concludes: “Like Outokumpu, OSTP is dedicated to exploring new roadmaps and initiatives, reinforcing our commitment to ongoing sustainability and environmental stewardship. Circle Green is a perfect fit for OSTP’s Ultra Green concept.”
