Selecting a suitable Ultra grade for highly corrosive applications

The Ultra range is a group of alloys consisting of some of the most corrosion resistant grades in Outokumpu’s product portfolio. The goal of this paper is to offer insight that may help in selecting the most appropriate Ultra grade for different highly corrosive environments.

The Ultra range products are intended for use in cases where the corrosion resistance of the grades of the Moda, Core and Supra ranges is insufficient. Even among the highly alloyed grades found in the Ultra range, however, there is a wide span of potential applications for the materials and it can at times be difficult to know which grade is most suitable for each specific case. The goal of this paper is to offer insight that may help in selecting the most appropriate Ultra grade for different highly corrosive environments.

When selecting materials it is helpful to have a basic understanding of their properties and how they are affected by different alloying strategies. Some of the more important aspects related to the Ultra grades will be discussed in this paper.

The white paper covers the following topics

  • The case for passivity
  • Ultra range vs Forta range
  • The effect of nickel
  • Pitting and crevice corrosion resistance
  • Seawater resistance
  • Uniform corrosion resistance
  • Stress corrosion cracking
  • H2S resistance
  • Summary and conclusions

If the exact conditions are not well known, it is important to consider how changes of different parameters may affect corrosivity. Will a slightly higher concentration or temperature affect the resistance of the selected alloy? What is the effect of chlorides or oxidizing contaminants on the material performance? An understanding of the candidate materials is always helpful and it is provided in this paper.
